Let the Doctor Rock You

Alternate Titles:

a.k.a. The Doctor

Lyrics:
Let the Doctor Rock You [Version (a)]:

Press 'em back, boys, all the way from the sun
Helium hearts are almost dead and won
The flapjack hands grow for a feel
'Cause you need love and some vitamin pills
Do it all night! Do it all night!
You and I delirious, a curious vice
A half-off price, running on the edges
Of an amateur delight

Headlights over the oceans of gold
Nothing cares if the shepherds are cold
Cold as ice at the sports chalet
'Cause you were born to watch the big boys play
Do it all night! Do it all night!
You and I delirious, a curious vice
A half-off price, running on the edges
Of an amateur delight

'Cause you and I know that anything goes
?? dimensions of release
You see, so they've grown
Let the doctor rock you, ohhhhhhh!

You were top-bill in the prison yards
I let you play with my security guards
Electric hands gropin' for a feel
'Cause you need love and some vitamin pills
Do it all night! Do it all night!
You and I delirious, a curious vice
A half-off price, running on the edges
Of an amateur delight

'Cause you and I know that anything goes
?? dimensions are released
You see, so they've grown
Let the doctor rock you, ahh!
Let the doctor rock you, ahh!
Let the doctor rock you, ahh!
Let the doctor rock you, ahh!

The Song:

Beck took a break from recording Midnite Vultures to do a corporate show/festival for Microsoft, and couldn't resist performing this, one of his newly written tracks.

Unfortunately, by the time Beck finished Vultures a year later, "Let the Doctor Rock You!" didn't fit on the album. So alas, it is now one of those lost gems. Fortunately, the live recording exists, showing the song to be a funky slab of honkytonk, in the vein of late '60s Rolling Stones or the like. It's got a phat bassline, acoustic guitar, sexy lyrics.

Also, a track referred to as "The Doctor" was a widely reported as being one of the songs ex-Smiths' guitarist, Johnny Marr, played on during the Midnite Vultures sessions. Marr hooked up with Beck on July 26 1999 and recorded a few songs, including "Milk & Honey." I'll assume "The Doctor" was actually this one? Though Beck did play it live a good nine months before Marr joined him in the studio, for now I am treating them as the same song.

Marr has actually talked about "The Doctor" a few times. He mentions it in his autobiography as a song he played on. In 2014, he said the song was really good and that whenever he sees Beck, Beck talks about releasing it. (Hard to imagine that will ever happen now though, unless we can get like a Deluxe version of Vultures.)

Live:

Played live once:
October 10, 1998

The first "Let the Doctor Rock You!" was on October 10, 1998. This was a Microsoft corporate party, not a regular tour show. It was not played since that time, since it did not make it on to Midnite Vultures.
